THE STUDIO

When you grow up in rural BC, 30 miles from town, 5 miles past the last power pole.... Graphic Design can be a hard thing to find - especially when your days are spent milking cows & chopping wood - yes, this is a true story.

I remember leaning out the window, one eye on the tv, hollering at my dad who was on the roof adjusting the antennae, letting him know when the tv reception for Hockey Night in Canada was clear. This was often done in blizzard conditions which required a quick clean up of the snow that had blown in during the pre-game adjustments. Eventually we moved closer to town, ditched the diesel generator and got on the grid - I used to do my homework by the light of a coal oil lantern - seriously. And eventually, I discovered Graphic Design. It wasn't a solid concept, and it wasn't clearly defined but it was a start.

Now, as Principal + Creative Director of COBER, I have the opportunity to play a significant role in helping businesses and organizations develop and establish effective and relevant design solutions to address their specific business challenges. From identity and brand creation through to interface design and development my experience and expertise has afforded the opportunity to fulfill a full spectrum of business objectives and requirements. With over 15 years of industry experience I have had the opportunity to work with a diverse group of clients including Openroad Communications, Rocky Mountain Bicycles, Karo Design Resources, Lionel Lorence, and BARE.

I currently serve as VP of Membership for the BC Chapter of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada. I am also a member of AIGA, The Designers Accord and the Surfrider Foundation.

PHILOSOPHY

Good design makes things better.
A good process makes doing good design easier.
Do good design within a defined and effective process.

PROCESS

In a world full of complex industries with complex challenges, & complex objectives, complexity often seems the de-facto context. But time & time again, the simple, well thought out solution, proves to be the one that resonates; the one that most effectively communicates the correct message & elicits the desired response.

And so the challenge is to devise a process (simple & effective) that consistently results in simple, well thought out, effective solutions that evoke the desired response.

The Process: Listen, Think, Design. I believe that by listening to the issues, the problems & the ideas, we will be able to think within the context of the challenge. Thinking within this context provides the perspective to understand the challenges & envision the possibilities. Designing with insight & knowledge allows us to creatively find the solution that will meet the objectives in an effective & appropriate manner.
